Litecoin MWEB - Updated Privacy Technical Analysis

[ CHRONICLE.ENTRY :: INFORMATIONAL.ONLY ]
Litecoin MWEB privacy technical analysis darknet payment use December 2025

Litecoin's MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB) feature has been live for several years. This analysis provides an updated assessment of its practical privacy properties for Nexus Onion users who prefer Litecoin transactions.

What MWEB Provides

MWEB implements the MimbleWimble protocol as an opt-in sidechain. Transactions opting into MWEB hide transaction amounts through Confidential Transactions. Sender and receiver information is also obscured within MWEB transactions.

MWEB Limitations

MWEB is opt-in - not all wallets support it, and transactions must explicitly use MWEB to benefit. The boundary transactions can leak information about amounts. An observer monitoring entry and exit points may correlate MWEB usage patterns.

MWEB vs Monero

For darknet marketplace use, Monero provides stronger privacy guarantees than MWEB. Monero's privacy is mandatory and applies to all transactions without configuration. The full cryptocurrency comparison covers all three accepted coins.
