Bitcoin (BTC) Privacy Guide

Bitcoin BTC coin with ritual sigil for darknet privacy transaction guide
[OMEN] :: BTC.TRANSPARENCY.HIGH — Consider Monero (XMR) for superior privacy. See XMR guide.

Bitcoin is pseudonymous, not anonymous. Every transaction is permanently recorded on a public blockchain readable by anyone. Chain analysis firms including Chainalysis and CipherTrace specialise in tracing BTC flows. Nexus Darknet accepts Bitcoin, but users who require strong anonymity should use XMR instead.

Understanding Bitcoin's Privacy Limitations

Bitcoin's UTXO model groups inputs and outputs in ways that leak information about wallet ownership. Common input ownership heuristic — the assumption that all inputs to a transaction come from the same wallet — allows chain analysis to cluster addresses. Address reuse creates permanent links between transactions.

Chain Analysis Risk Factors

  • Purchasing BTC from a KYC exchange links your real identity to wallet addresses
  • Sending BTC directly from a KYC exchange to a darknet market is high risk
  • Address reuse connects multiple transactions to the same wallet
  • Change outputs in transactions reveal wallet clustering
  • Transaction timing can be correlated with on-chain activity

Privacy Tools for Bitcoin Users

CoinJoin — Collaborative Mixing

CoinJoin is a Bitcoin transaction format where multiple parties combine their inputs and outputs, breaking the link between sender and receiver. Wasabi Wallet implements WabiSabi CoinJoin on desktop. JoinMarket provides a decentralised P2P mixing protocol.

Lightning Network

The Lightning Network adds a payment channel layer above Bitcoin's base layer. Payments routed through multiple hops are harder to trace than on-chain transactions. Suitable for smaller amounts with proper channel management.

Acquire BTC Without KYC

  • Bisq — Decentralised P2P exchange, no account, no KYC
  • RoboSats — Lightning-based P2P exchange, accessible over Tor
  • HodlHodl — Non-custodial P2P exchange with multisig escrow
  • Bitcoin ATMs with no KYC (transaction limit varies by jurisdiction)

Recommended BTC Wallets for Privacy

  • Wasabi Wallet — Built-in CoinJoin, Tor integration, UTXO management
  • Samourai Wallet — Android wallet with Whirlpool mixing and Tor support
  • Sparrow Wallet — Desktop wallet with coin control and CoinJoin support

Minimum Privacy Steps Before Using BTC on Nexus

  1. Acquire BTC from a no-KYC source
  2. Run through at least one round of CoinJoin (Wasabi Wallet)
  3. Wait 24+ hours after mixing before depositing to marketplace
  4. Use a fresh wallet address for the deposit — never reuse
  5. Connect Tor Browser to the Nexus onion, then deposit
  6. Never deposit directly from an exchange wallet
Even with these steps, Bitcoin does not offer the same level of privacy as Monero. For the highest operational security, switch to XMR. Read the Monero guide for the easiest path to private payments.
